If you are looking for soccer fun, we have a program for you!
Sunday Soccer Program Under 4 and Under 5 |
|---|
The Sunday Soccer Program began with the idea of very young players looking to play for purely recreational purposes with very little time commitment. Our new stars in the game begin their season with a five week program, beginning March 25th and ending May 6th, to teach basic principles to the player and parent and prepare them for a fun filled lifetime of soccer excitement. Games are played weekly on Sunday afternoons with medals and t-shirts for all participants. A low key intro to soccer, this program allows players to be slowly introduced to the game, play fun soccer-related games, have hundreds of touches on the ball and meet new friends in the community. For more information regarding the Sunday Soccer Program please email a board member at info@birmingham-united.com. Sunday Soccer is planned at the SportsFirst 1996 Fields Soccer Complex this spring.
Under 6 Program
The regular American Soccer Club Under 6 Recreational Programs will also be available with practice one day per week and games on Saturday mornings at Heardmont Park. A U5 player may register for either or both programs for the fall season.

We don’t teach children to read before letter recognition, or to add before they understand the concept of the value of a number, so why should we teach them to apply tactical soccer concepts they cannot proficiently execute? Our Under 6, 3 vs 3 program introduces players to the basic shape of the game, the triangle, and starts teaching them basic ball mastery skills. The emphasis is on learning and fun while working with the ball. The U8 program begins practices Feb 26th week and games begin on March 17th.
Under 8 Program
In the Under 8, 4 vs 4 program, players take their understanding of soccer triangles into a diamond shape. In both programs, players have more opportunities to get touches on the ball, take shots, and of course, celebrate their GOALS!!
Birmingham United strongly encourages all players to develop their skills by includes a playing time rule in the recreational program. Players receive a t-shirt for their uniform and a participation award at the conclusion of the season. The program begins in late February and runs through May 12, with practice 1 day per week with their team and a weekly skills session with a paid and licensed technical trainer. Your player is sure to develop skills while having fun creating friendships, exercising, and developing confidence this season! |
Under 9 and Older Program |
|---|
The next program progression is Under 9 and 10, 6 vs 6. Our 6v6 program adds the goalkeeper role to the game and extends the shape to multiple triangles. Players will continue to develop their ball mastery and basic tactical concepts. At the Under 11 and 12 ages, the progression of play moves to 8 vs 8, where the players move to a larger field and begin to learn execute the same tactical activities they see watching soccer on TV. At Under 13 and older, players “graduate” to the full sided 11 vs 11 game on a full size field, the same format they will enjoy for the rest of their lives.
Under 9 and older players have an 8 week season, generally with 1 game per weekend and 2 practices per week, as well as in a tournament or festival at the end of each season. Practices can begin the week of Feb 20th with games kicking off March 17th. All U9 and U10 teams practice with their coach one night per week, and attend a skills night on Tuesday with a licensed staff trainer as their second practice. Players will purchase a required American Soccer Club recreational uniform (jersey, shorts, socks) from our club outfitter, A Winning Streak soccer shop on Hwy 119. |
Under 9 and 10 Academy Program |
|---|
The Academy program is designed to help those Under 9 and 10 players who are seeking an extra challenge develop the ingredients they will need to succeed in the game at the highest level. We developed our academy program as a way to provide Under 9 and Under 10 players who are members of our recreational program with the opportunity to receive a more focused professional training without the pressure of playing up into the Competitive Program. In the Academy, over the course of the season players train six times with expert professional staff in addition to their regular recreational team practices, and participate in two Academy events in addition to their regular recreational team games.
It is the Academy's primary aim to keep soccer fun so that the vital ingredient of enjoyment is achieved at all times, while simultaneously preparing players for the next level. In Academy training, the technical staff will teach and develop these players to have the confidence and the technical ability to enjoy the game and be successful at which ever level they find themselves upon their graduation from the Academy. The practice format will consist of 30- 40 minutes of technical exercises working on ball mastery following the Coerver player pyramid. The players then will be placed into groups or teams and the tactical topic for the session will be addressed. Group composition will vary from session to session based on player skill and attitude.
At Academy events, players will be grouped into teams to play in games against teams from other area programs. The selection process will be guided by players attitude towards the staff and fellow players and by performance in all games and practices, including those with their recreational teams. This will be decided at the coach's discretion and can change from practice to practice. It is United’s aim to have all players who graduate from this two year Academy program ready to play at a level where they are competent and composed with the technical element of the game, and understand the basic mechanics of how a soccer team operates on the field in a competitive environment. |
